A place in history
Nowadays, Panormos is a quaint but modern settlement with all anticipated infrastructure, which is a touristic pole of attraction, every year. In the beginning of the previous century, it was known as Kasteli Mylopotamou or Roumeli Kasteli and in its place, there used to sit a Roman town named Panormos, apparently after its leeward bay. In the past, Panormos was one of the most important transit ports on Crete. By today’s village pier, the Genovese pirate Henry Pescatore, in the beginning of the 13 th century, built the fortress Castel Milopotamo. When the Venetians invaded Crete, they retained the fortress, where today’s Panormos has developed to this day. Castel Milopotamo had a north to south orientation, the shape of an egg, seven tiers and two gates, one by the sea and the other towards the south. It has been destroyed many a times by Venetians, Ottomans and pirate Barbarossa who annihilated it in 1538. Today, there is still evidence of its existence in the sea, by a little chapel.
